Shoes are the hardest thing to buy from memory

Shoe sizing is three systems that do not line up, plus a brand that decided to be half a size off. Add a second and third person in the house and there is no chance of holding it in your head.

The sale is on, the pair is in stock, and you are standing in the shop trying to work out whether your partner is a 39 or a 40, and whether that is even the same 39 as this brand means.

Foot length in centimetres solves it, because it converts to anything. Almost nobody has it written down.

What goes on the card

  • Foot length in centimetres, the one number that converts everywhere
  • EU, UK and US sizes side by side
  • Brand exceptions, like a running shoe that needs half a size more
  • Winter boots separately, because socks change the answer
  • Width and shape notes, narrow, wide, high instep

One card per person in the house

In store you open the person, not the guesswork.

Measure once, properly

Two minutes with a sheet of paper beats a year of guessing.

  • Measure in the evening, feet are slightly larger by then
  • Stand on the paper with your weight on the foot, do not sit
  • Mark the heel and the longest toe, which is not always the big one
  • Measure both feet and keep the larger number
  • Add 5 to 10 mm of room and write that on the card

Questions people ask

Why store foot length and not just the size?

Because length in centimetres is the only value that survives a change of brand or country. Most manufacturers publish a length to size chart, so with the number you can always work out the size.

Can I keep a childs size and see when it will change?

Yes. Add the date of measurement and a reminder, and Specsy will nudge you a few months later to measure again.

Does it convert sizes automatically?

Specsy stores what you write rather than guessing conversions, because brands disagree with the official tables often enough to matter.

Save it once. Find it whenever you need it.
