The number is right, the date is wrong
You remember that your son is a 27. He was, in February. It is now September and the shoes you just bought will be tight by half term.
Childrens sizing also runs on height, not age, and the two drift apart quickly. A label saying 5 to 6 years means very little next to a measurement of 116 cm.
The fix is small: write the measurement down with the day you took it, and set a reminder to check again before the season changes.
What to write down for a child
- Height in centimetres, the number most childrens clothing is sized by
- Foot length, so a size in any country can be worked out
- The date of the measurement, which is what makes the rest trustworthy
- One size up for outerwear, with the reason noted
- School uniform details, including the exact jumper and where it was bought

A rule of thumb, not a medical chart. The point is to set the reminder, not to be exact.

- Wellingtons, yes, thick socks take up the difference
