Models and product details
Every appliance model number, before you need it
You need the model number exactly twice: when a part breaks, and when you are on the phone to a repair company. Both times it is behind the machine.

The number is always in the worst possible place
Model numbers live on the back of the washing machine, under the fridge door seal, or on the inside of the oven frame. Places you can only reach by moving the appliance.
And you never need it on a calm afternoon. You need it when there is water on the floor, or when a support agent is waiting on the line.
Ten minutes with a phone camera, once, and every one of those calls gets shorter.
What belongs on an appliance card
- Model number and serial number, photographed rather than typed
- Date of purchase and where from, which is what a warranty claim needs
- Warranty length and the date it expires
- The consumables it eats, filters, bags, descaler
- A photo of the receipt, since thermal paper fades to blank within a couple of years
Where the label usually hides
| Appliance | Look here |
|---|---|
| Washing machine | Inside the door frame, or on the back panel |
| Fridge | Inside, on the wall behind the salad drawer |
| Oven | On the frame, visible when the door is open |
| Dishwasher | On the edge of the door, only visible when open |
| Boiler | Inside the front cover, often on a data plate |
The receipt is the part that disappears
Warranty claims fail on the receipt more often than on the fault. Thermal till paper fades, and two years is enough to turn it into a blank strip.
A photo attached to the card is a permanent copy. Retailers accept it, and it stays with the model number rather than in a drawer with fifty other receipts.
Questions people ask
Is a serial number really needed, or is the model enough?
The model tells a shop which part fits. The serial tells the manufacturer which production run yours is from, which matters for recalls and for some spare parts.
Can I attach the manual?
Attach a photo of the data plate and a link to the manual on the manufacturer site. That is usually more reliable than a PDF stored on a phone.
How many appliances do people usually add?
Around eight to twelve. The large kitchen items, the boiler, the washing machine and anything with a service contract.
